Stuttgart. The home of today’s Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has a very special sound in the world of motoring: Zuffenhausen. Indeed, Zuffenhausen is far more than “just” a production plant rich in tradition for Porsche AG, since it is here in Zuffenhausen that the heart of the Company beats to this very day. Zuffenhausen has been Porsche’s home address for more than 70 years and more than one million Porsche sports cars have been built here in Stuttgart since 1950.

The Porsche Design and Construction office moved from Kronenstrasse 24 in downtown Stuttgart to the new group of buildings in the District of Zuffenhausen way back in June 1938. Right from the beginning, important chapters in the history of the automobile were then written in Porsche’s home plant: This is where the first series of the car destined to become the Volkswagen Beetle was built in 1938, followed in 1939 by the Type 64 as the great-grandfather of all Porsche sports cars to come in later years. Originally planned for the Berlin-Rome long-distance race, this aerodynamic, highly streamlined sports car became the trendsetter for all Porsche models to follow.

After the first few units of the Porsche 356 had been built in the Austrian town of Gmünd as of 1948, Porsche returned to Stuttgart as a genuine “car city” in late 1949. With the Porsche Plant in Zuffenhausen still being occupied at the time by the US military, Porsche first rented a production hall on the premises of the nearby Reutter & Co. GmbH Coachbuilding and Body Construction Plant, starting to prepare production in early 1950.
With the first Type 356 being completed in Stuttgart on 6 April 1950, overall production up to the end of the year amounted to 369 units.
The success of Porsche’s sports cars is borne out clearly not only by the Company’s sales figures, but also by the further expansion of the production facilities in Zuffenhausen. The buildings forming Porsche Plant 2 designed by the well-known architect Rolf Gutbrod were completed in 1952 and in 1956 the 10,000th Porsche 356 left the plant, which was consistently enlarged and upgraded over the years. Porsche Plant 3 followed in 1960, also housing the Sales and Customer Service Departments.

Immediately after the introduction of the Porsche 911, Porsche KG, as the Company was still called at the time, took over the Reutter Coachbuilding and Body Construction Company in 1964 with its workforce of approximately 1,000 employees. Today the complete 911 model series as well as models of the Boxster series and all Porsche engines are built in Zuffenhausen.

The Plant is split up into the Bodyshop, Paint shop, Vehicle Assembly, Upholstery, Engine Assembly and Test Dynamometers. To ensure flexible production in a confined area, Porsche has developed special solutions including multi-floor production in the Bodyshop and Vehicle Assembly. A further special feature is that Porsche’s series models are built together with the racing versions on one and the same assembly line. As yet a further highlight a new, particularly ecological Paint shop will be opened in 2011. Currently being built in the direct vicinity of Plants 1 and 5, the new Paint shop will be situated on the former premises of Dürr AG purchased by Porsche in spring 2008.

The new Porsche Museum was opened in January 2009 as an additional pledge to Zuffenhausen. Here, virtually on the Company’s home ground, some 80 historical cars and exhibits from the history of the Company are presented in an exhibition area of 5,600 square metres or 60,200 square feet. As the most spectacular building project commissioned by Porsche, the Porsche Museum has not only gone down in the history of the Company, but also enriches the entire Stuttgart Region as an outstanding highlight in culture and architecture.

The Porsche Museum is honouring the 60th anniversary of Porsche in Zuffenhausen with a special exhibition: The beginnings and the ongoing development of production at Zuffenhausen are being presented by a series of photos in this exhibition from 20 March to 9 May 2010. A further outstanding highlight is the first Porsche 356 Coupé built in Zuffen-
hausen shown for the first time in the Museum after an unusual restoration process.

1938 Porsche Type 64 – on display at "The Allure of the Automobile" exhibition

The Porsche Museum in Germany has sent its legendary Type 64 Berlin Rome Car on a long journey to Atlanta where it will be on display at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta for the "The Allure of the Automobile" exhibition from March 21st until June 20th, 2010 to celebrate the brand’s 60th Anniversary in America. “Type 64 is of very special significance to the history of the Porsche brand: Built in 1938/39 under the guidance of Ferdinand Porsche... It was beautiful, dynamic and fast – and it quickly became Ferdinand Porsche’s great passion: Although this unique sports car built for the Berlin-Rome long-distance race bore nothing but the simple model designation “Type 64”, it is acknowledged as the “original Porsche”, the“great-grandfather” of all Porsches to follow. Within and beneath its streamlined aluminum body, Type 64 boasts the trendsetting concepts so characteristic of all Porsche sports cars following in the years to come. In terms of design and aerodynamics this unique Coupé was far ahead of its time, the symbiosis of motorsport qualities and production features creating an ideal grand touring car. On public roads Type 64 reached a top speed of no less than 130 km/h or 81 mph. The Porsche 64, also known as the VW Aerocoupe, Type 64 and Type 60K10, is considered by many to be the first automobile from what was to become the Porsche company, as a true design precursor to the production model of after the war. The model number comes from the fact that it was built mainly from design drawings for the Type-64 "record car". Most mechanical parts came from the 38 prototype series. The chassis was heavily reinforced and the engine also reworked to produce around 45-50 brake horse power. The Type-64 was only a drawing until the three racers were built. The body was also a compromise in that the cab had to look like a KdF car, but the rest was 'record' car. The VW beetle was the Type-60, and the name the "60K10" means body design 10 for the Type-60 Beetle. Its flat-four engine produced 50 bhp and gave a top speed of around 160 km/h (99 mph). The body design was made by the Porsche Büro after wind tunnel tests for a planned V10 sports car that never came into existence, the Type 114. Dr. Porsche promoted the idea to enter the car into the 1939 Berlin-Rome race as a public relations ploy. Three cars were made in hand shaped aluminum by the bodywork company Reutter. One was destroyed early in World War II. The two remaining were used by the Porsche family.[citation needed] Eventually they only used one of them and put the other in storage.[citation needed] In May 1945 American troops discovered the one put in storage, cut the roof off and used it for joyriding for a few weeks until the engine gave up and it was scrapped. The last remaining Porsche 64 was owned by Ferry Porsche who had it restored by Battista Farina in 1947. In 1949 it was sold to the Austrian motorcycle racer Otto Mathé and with it he won the Alpine Rally in 1950. The last time he drove it in a race was at the Monterey Historic Races in Monterey, California, in 1982.

We follow where it leads us, we trust it, were children...we are happy, but somewhere between then and now, we lose touch with the voice, no matter how closely it whispers, or how loud it cry's.

Instead are ears are tuned to other things, like the stock reports, 6 o'clock news, then one day, putting the forks in the dishwasher or mowing the lawn, we happened to catch the glimpse of joy in our children's faces....and we REMEMBER, what it felt like. 

Remember ....what it felt like to listen to that voice in our hearts...and go with it. Then suddenly out of nowhere this SPARK of wisdom occurs. It becomes very clear. It's NOT to late. Your heart's still speaking. All you have to do is LISTEN.

via Porsche is using the Google Maps API and the Panoramio API to promote the new Cayenne. The new promotional site from Porsche allows you to virtually test drive a new Cayenne, with the help of Google Maps. The site allows you to choose the Porsche model you would like to try and then select a route for your test drive. You are then presented with a personalized flash movie, that mashes up video of the selected Porsche, the route on Google Maps and photographs along your route from Panoramio. The presentation is very slick, with the Panoramio photographs and Google Map seamlessly integrated with promotional video of the Cayenne. The photos are shown in the wing mirrors and reflected off the surface of the car and the route of your drive is animated on Google Maps.

Endurance racing legend Derek Bell has been named Grand Marshal for the 58th running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

A highlight at Sebring is the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron Driver Autograph Session on Friday at noon in the paddock. Every driver in the race will be  participating in this popular event.

At 2:30 pm, the Sebring Hall of Fame autograph session takes place in the Gallery of Legends building featuring former Sebring winners Hurley Haywood, Derek Daly, John Morton and Hans Herrmann. The Gallery Legends will also include a display of historic Sebring cars, including legendary Porsches and Jaguars.

Walter Rohrl Will Tackle Nurburgring 24 Hour Race In Porsche 911 GT3 RS

a "Genius on Wheels", "Lord of the 'Ring" and "Best Rallye driver ever". In recent years, he has been retained as the senior test driver for Porsche road cars, famously setting quick laptimes for them testing round the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife, for example with the Porsche Carrera GT.

Röhrl, now 62, is currently the brand’s ambassador and key test driver. In his latest endeavor with Porsche, the racing legend will compete in the Nurburgring 24 hour race in May next year using a regular 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. It will also mark Röhrl’s return to Germany's largest racing event since last competing in 1993.

From 1993 to date, Röhrl has conducted tests in every standard Porsche vehicle on the Nürburgring. For Röhrl, the latest 911 GT3 RS is the closest road-going 911 to an actual race car that he has ever driven.

The 2010 Porsche 911 GT RS is powered by a 450 horsepower 3.8-liter flat-six engine and features a particularly short transmission ratio for racing purposes as a standard.

The 38th running of the Nurburgring 24 hour race takes place on 15-16 May 2010.
